Pozuzo, a perfect place for your vacation

Pozuzo is an Austro-German colony founded in 1859. With great effort, the immigrants built the town, its church, and its European-style houses, and they lived here practically isolated for 100 years. They cultivated the soil, raised their own animals, and maintained their customs, language, and cuisine.
Currently, the residents of Pozuzo make their living from livestock, rice, cassava, bananas, and coffee. Tourism has lately acquired a lot of strength and is a good alternative for the town’s economic development.

Pozuzo is located within a tropical rainforest area of Peru containing abundant flora and fauna. The temperature oscillates between 18 and 30 degrees Celsius. The best time of the year to visit Pozuzo is from April to November, as the rainy season lasts from December until March.

Three or four nights is ideal to fully enjoy Pozuzo; there are people who stay with us for one or two weeks and feel very much at home.

You can’t miss the hike to the typical house of Palmatambo, a rural, cultural, traditional, and adventurous experience.

The Schaferer Museum has valuable information about the history of Pozuzo, and the tour of the museum with Eva Solleder is very interesting. Other points of interest include the Neines House Museum with Cecilia Köhel, the Egg Vogt Museum with Helmut Egg, and the San José Church.

In the town you can find Josefa’s Craft Shop, drink beer in the Dörcher, dance with the Tanzgruppe, and have lunch at the Típico Pozucino or the Típico Prusia.

It is best to use the services of local guides to experience the various aspects of the town, since they are very familiar with the geography and history of Pozuzo.

One of the most visited places are the Agua y Sal pools, and the Balcón de Trama has picturesque views. Further on this path you’ll find San Salvador, which possesses an impressive landscape and a church that dates back to the 19th century.

From May to October you can participate in canoeing on the Huancabamba River with Gringo and Markus.

In Sepp Gstir’s landholding, you can visit the Gallitos de las Rocas trail. Another nice hike is the Colonist Trail in Yanachaga-Chemillén National Park, which is a Pleistocene refuge possessing a wide variety of flora and another place where you may view the Gallitos de las Rocas. Near the national park you can also find the Lluvias Eternas de Yuli Tunqui falls.

Enjoying the sun, the blue skies, the rain, or the starry night sky accompanied by the sounds of nature is an incredible experience. There are many other things that could be mentioned, but the most important among them is the welcoming hospitality of the people of Pozuzo.

How can I get to Pozuzo?

• By car: Take the central highway toward Ticlio and La Oroya, continue through the exit toward Tarma, and keep going to La Merced and Oxapampa. Before arriving at Pozuzo, you must drive across the Yanachaga-Chemillen National Park, which has beautiful views of the Huancabamba Canyon.
Travel time between Lima and Pozuzo is approximately 10 hours.

• By bus: Goes directly from Lima to Oxapampa. I recommend the buses of Movil Tours or Cruz del Sur. Once in the Oxapampa station, you may take a car to Pozuzo.

• By plane: From Lima to Jauja or Pucallpa. Then you can go to Pozuzo by car. Both routes from Jauja and from Pucallpa take between 6 and 7 hours.
